RE: DirecTv Mount

I made the one KeninAZ mentioned above. I made a few changes to mine.
Here is the complete unit.
http://i38.photobucket.com/albums/e141/SAR41/RV/Complete.jpg width=640
Here is the stand without the dish connected.
http://i38.photobucket.com/albums/e141/SAR41/RV/StandSep.jpg width=640
Here the dish is seperated from the stand for storage.
http://i38.photobucket.com/albums/e141/SAR41/RV/DishSep.jpg width=640
I drilled and put the clevis pin in to be able to fold the LNB down for better storage.
http://i38.photobucket.com/albums/e141/SAR41/RV/LNBFolded.jpg width=640
Glued the bubble level to arm that the dish mounts on to make sure the dish was level, not the stand.
http://i38.photobucket.com/albums/e141/SAR41/RV/Level.jpg width=640
Glued the compass to stand.
http://i38.photobucket.com/albums/e141/SAR41/RV/173Deg.jpg width=640
Installed 1/4 X 20 thread inserts for leveling legs. This I still need to make changes to. After useing it a couple of times, find that I need longer leveling legs. So I plan to drill through the top and put longer all thread through with a handle on top and a pad on the bottom.

RE: Anybody flat tow a Ford ranger PU?

I tow a 03 Ranger 4X4 Manual trans. Perfect tow vehicle for me. Light and it holds my two scooters in the back. Up to the 06 model it has to be a 4X4 manual transmission. Look up which one you are considering at Motorhome Magazine and go to the Dinghy Guide. This will tell you which ones are towable. And then always check the owners manual to make certain. I believe the 06 has a kit you can buy to make the automatic transmission towable. After 06 I believe the automatics are towable. But check to make sure.
It does make a good tow vehicle because of its weight and it trails good behind the motorhome.

RE: Added Bilstein Shocks-WOW

I agree with you, adding the Bilsteins were the best upgrade I have made on my MH. Like you, I didn't think it was going to make that big of a difference, but it. The DW doesn't complain when I ask her to get up and get something!! Anything that keeps the DW from complaining is a GOOD thing!

RE: Motorcycles/Scooters

AKBOB after a lot of reading I decide one could be better off to go with an older used Honda unless if had a good dealer in your area for the China knock offs. SAR41 comments about going tail heavy concerns me. The Helix 250cc is about 350 pounds and then mounted a couple feet behind the motor home is going to push of the effective weight. I could handle the weight barely on the rear but it would take some off of the front. I expect I will do nothing until after the first long trip so we see first hand what are our options. Being on the road will let us see what others are doing in the way of toad solutions.
Mine was definitely a problem for me. But I had a little more weight than what you are looking at. Just the two scooters weighted 456 plus I had the dual Versa Hauler. Not sure of the weight, but I would guess close to 100#. Plus another issue that I didn't mention was when ever I went thru any small dip, the tail end of the hauler would drag. So had to be real careful. Plus it was not real easy to load and unload. It's a lot better with the toed, unhook and remove Brake Buddy in a minute or two. With the scooters, it was a at least a 20 minute job to unload and properly a 30 or more to reload and tie down. So if you wanted to make a quick stop some where and do a little site seeing or run around town, it' a lot easier to do it in the toed than the 30' MH.

RE: Motorcycles/Scooters

I bought a Versa Haul Dual receiver carrier. Used it for one 4000 mile trip and removed it and now it's collecting dust in my shop. Found it added too much weight to the rear of my MH. Front end too light and semi's almost blew me off the road when passing me. Now I have the set up below. Much better. Then have a choice if weather is bad and you don't even notice it back there.
Thats 2 Yamaha 125 Vinos in rear. They weigh 228 lbs each.

RE: GPS Observations

I have the 360 NUVI also. I have mine set to BUS. But have not noticed where it rerouted me or made any changes that would have made me think it was allowing for a bus.
Other than that, I wouldn't do without it. Like the bluetooth for hands free cell phone. Plus it has all phone numbers of any place you look up and just hit one button and you are dialing it.

RE: Picture posting thread...anyone into it?

I took a few days off this week to play around in my shop. My first project was the satellite stand I showed the other day. This was my next project, a tow shield for my Ford Ranger.
It's made from 3/4 PVC and deer mesh.
http://i38.photobucket.com/albums/e141/SAR41/RV/TowShield.jpg width=640
Here's how I mounted it to the tow bar.
http://i38.photobucket.com/albums/e141/SAR41/RV/TowShieldMount.jpg width=640
And a side view.
http://i38.photobucket.com/albums/e141/SAR41/RV/TowShieldSide.jpg width=640
Then I figured my toys needed a good cleaning and waxing.
http://i38.photobucket.com/albums/e141/SAR41/RV/RangerScootersSide.jpg width=640
Scooters got a good waxing also.
http://i38.photobucket.com/albums/e141/SAR41/RV/RearViewRangerScooters.jpg width=640
Inside got a good cleaning.
http://i38.photobucket.com/albums/e141/SAR41/RV/InsideRanger.jpg width=640
Then I installed a power switch in the dash.
http://i38.photobucket.com/albums/e141/SAR41/RV/SwitchinRanger.jpg width=640
The switch powers the Garmin NUVI and the Pressure Pro. Did the same in the Motorhome last week with the same switch.
http://i38.photobucket.com/albums/e141/SAR41/RV/GarminPressPro.jpg width=640
Now it time to go play. We have a trip planned for next week to Heber Utah. I am going to hate to get it dirty, but that's way it goes.

RE: Brake Buddy. Do you like your's?

I think it depends a lot on which model you have. There are three different models. The first is the Classic, there have been a lot of real good reports on this unit. The second is the Brake Buddy Vantage, there has been a lot of negative reports on this one mainly on the wireless unit not working back to the motorhome. Here is a link to one of those threads that goes into the problems. And then third, there is the brake Buddy Vantage Select that just came out. I have a thread on this one I just bought. Here is a link to that one. The select model just came out and I have not seen any other reports on it other than the one I have. I just got mine and have only tried it out one time so far and it worked good then. I will be going on a trip next week and will be able to report on it again after that.
So, which one do you have, I would be interested to hear from your experience.

RE: Built my Homemade Tow Shield

The deer mesh cost $23. But that was a 100 foot roll. I used only 35 feet or so. I don't remember the cost of the pipe and fittings. I already had most of them from when I ran some water lines in my shop. I would guess around $20 or so for the fittings and glue. So I guess less than $50 for everything including the paint. A lot less than 300.
Riverton, great. You will like it there. It's lower in elevation there than here. So the winters are not as harsh as we get. I have a good friend that moved from here to there a few years ago and he calls me all the time to let me know how much warmer he is than we are and to laugh, and yes, I still call him a friend.
There is a lot to do around Riverton, like Castle Gardens and the sinks. Your close to a lot of really neat places. Let me know when you get there and I will send you some info and pictures of some of it. Have fun.

RE: Built my Homemade Tow Shield

Rocks. I have towed it about 4000 miles over the last year and the front looked like it had been peppered with buck shot. Had to redo the paint in the front and on the last trip one of the fog lights got busted out from a rock. The replacement lamp cost $80. So I knew I had to do something. The ones I have seen for sale cost around $300 and only went to the tow bar. That left the bottom half of the truck unprotected because the bar is so high on the ranger.

RE: Picture posting thread...anyone into it?

Well I'm shut down here in Laramie, WY due to a snow storm. I-80 is closed and I can't get anywhere. The good news is that I get to be here and update my photos. Wednesday driving through Oregon down I84 and the Columbia River.
Sorry to see that you got shut down. It's seems to always have bad weather by Laramie. That's the reason it's called Snowy Range right there. The weathers been great on this end of the state.
Great pictures. I know where some of the last pictures you posted were taken. Just past Lyman and by Green River.
Be careful when it does open back up. You know how it will be. A mad race with all the trucks trying to catch up for time lost.

Built my Homemade Tow Shield

I would like to thank whoever posted this idea a while back. I wish I had wrote his name down. So I did not come up with this design, but it sure was easy to build and cost very little.
Here's a picture of the front. It's made from 3/4"PVC. I used a product called Deer Guard. It a strong plastic mesh. It's made to keep deer from eating your plants. It felt strong but real light, so I put 5 layers of the mesh to make sure it would be strong enough and this made the holes a lot smaller so that it should stop all small rocks. I used PVC cement to glue the mesh all around the frame. I also used ty-wraps to hold it till I could glue it. Just left the ty-wraps on. Then I used Krylon Plastic Fusion paint to paint it.
http://i38.photobucket.com/albums/e141/SAR41/RV/TowShield.jpg width=640
Here is how I mounted it to the Truck using the Tow Bar Pins. I will also have a rope hooked at each 45 deg bend on top to tie back to the hitch on the MH.
http://i38.photobucket.com/albums/e141/SAR41/RV/TowShieldMount.jpg width=640
Here's a side view.
http://i38.photobucket.com/albums/e141/SAR41/RV/TowShieldSide.jpg width=640
I will try it out next weekend on a trip we are making. I hope the person who posted this before see this and at last takes credit. Thanks again.

RE: Get 119 signal, no 119 programming, Dish 500

I just purchased an extra dish 500 to carry with me. When I was trying to setup for the first time, I had the same problem. I talked to the guy I got it from, he's an installer, he came by and tried also. Was still having the same problem, only lock on 110, not 119. I made the suggestion that maybe the cable was hooked up on the wrong fitting on the LNB. He said no, it didn't matter which fitting it was on. The stand I was building was not complete, just had to test before I was finished.(no patience on my part) So he suggested that I finish and get it perfectly level then try. After he left, I switched the cable to the middle fitting and it came right in first try.
So, I am not an expert, not sure if it was just dumb luck or it made a difference as to which fitting on the LNB I used. But it worked great after that.

RE: tank valve lubricant

I love WD-40. It helps keep my business profitable. What a lot of people do not know is that WD-40 will cause some rubber to swell and soften. Some Viton and buna o-rings will be ruined by WD-40. My company repairs and calibrates electronic and pneumatic calibration equipment. A lot of the operators in plants think WD-40 will fix anything, so if it doesn't work right , soak it with WD-40 and then you send it into us because it not going to work now. So I like the stuff.
OK, I'm ready to get slammed and flamed by all the WD-40 worshipers, I have my Nomex on!!
